So much has been said about this subject in the past but I feel I must reiterate the importance of getting your own domain name if you are to be taken seriously in the home business world.
There is nothing more offputting than seeing an ad with a free domain name attached I personally will bypass such businesses.
The fact of the matter is that a business person who is not prepared to pay a sum, of at most 35 per year, to register a domain name just doesn’t deserve to be taken seriously. You can of course find sites that will register your domain name for as little as 10 per year. You can then get your website hosted for a few dollars per month.
Registering your domain name builds credibility and creates an identity for your business.
When choosing a domain name it is better to use a term that is going to stick in the mind of prospective buyers, something that your visitors will remember you by. For example Betterbuymarketing.com would be an example of a relatively short and catchy domain. Unfortunately a greater of two word domain names have been taken up by the 100,000s of online businesses but if you persist you can get something suitable.
It doesn’t have to be a .com name although this is preferable. I personally host two of my sites using the .info and .biz domains. See below: http://www.workathomebiz.info http://www.workfromhomebiz.biz
It is also a great idea to use keywords relating to the type of business you run. You can see from my own two businesses above that this has been my strategy. This can significantly enhance search engine ranking for these keywords and I now rank in the top pages of Google/Yahoo for both these sites with the terms work from home and work at home business information.
Another important aspect of owning your own domain is when it comes to e-mail marketing. Who are you more likely to buy from, bob@yahoo.com or bob@betterbuymarketing.com? Selling online is all about building trust between you and your customers and registering your domain can go a long way towards building this bond between you and your website visitors.
Whether you use the above strategies or not, it is extremely important that you take that first step now and register your own domain name. At the very least the name will become your property and, depending on the amount of work you put into building your web presence, may become very valuable one day.

According to Nielsen net ratings, every month, about half of all search engine queries are unique. This statistic, although vague and seemingly insignificant, is actually the greatest factor behind why eCommerce Soltuions fare so well in search. We interpret the statistic like this: Half of all searches cannot be predicted, the other half can be.
Great. So what does that have to do with eCommerce? The reason why eCommerce and SEO are better for each other than Forrest was for Jenny is due to the massive amount of content contained within the average eCommerce solution and that content’s ability to target both predictable and unpredictable (long-tail) search phrases.
eCommerce solutions have a major advantage over any other database driven site for a number of reasons.
Abundant Content: Unlike a blog, article directory or content managed site, thousands of search engine friendly pages can be literally uploaded and indexed by the search engines. Easy Unique Content: A product or category page needs a few tech specs and a brief description. As long as that content is unique to the site, a webmaster can litter the search engines with products and categories. The time it would take for a blog or content managed site to reach that same level using unique content is staggering. Targeting the Predictable & Unpredictable: Category pages can be targeted for predictable searches like “red widgets.” Product pages can capture the unpredictable ones like “red widgets with tassels”(provided they contain keyword-rich descriptions).
So how can you make the most of your eCommerce solution in the search engines? As promised here is a list of 25 general tips.
Most Importantly:
Pick the right solution: Get an eCommerce provider that allows you to do everything we mention in this list. And hey, what do you know? Bridgeline’s eCommerce Solution lets you do all of this… Crazy how that works out, no?
Onsite Optimization Tips
Unique title tags: The content contained within should not be repeated verbatim within the site. Put your site name after the product or category name in the title tag: Use your site to Brand, use your search engine listing to get clicks. Unique meta data: Take the time to make your meta data (description & keywords) unique for each page. Obviously, that can be tricky if you have 10,000 skus, so try and get your developer to populate that area with the product description. Use H1 tags: And put your keywords in them. Go to your source. Search for ‘ Use more than manufacturer data: If your product pages only contain the specs and descriptions that your manufacturer provides, the search engines will lump that product page together with the hundreds of other ones out there with the same specs and descriptions, meaning it won’t find its way into the search engine result pages (SERPS). Take the time to add unique copy to your product and category pages Link to other products and categories from that copy Use alt tags: I know. I heard too. They’re useless. Use them anyway. SEO is about a conglomeration of variables, not a single supreme one. Have a clear category tree: Search engines like that. Use a search engine friendly navigation: Text links are best. Don’t like text and want to use images? Make sure you use alt tags. Using flash or doing postbacks? Stop that! Create an XML based sitemap and put it in Google webmaster tools
Offsite Optimization (Link Building) Tips
Link building is incredibly difficult for eCommerce sites because no one wants to link to your drop shipping site when they can link to the real thing or Target.com. Here is what you need to know:
Build domain authority: Domain authority is basically a measure of the number of high quality sites linking to yours. The more the better. So how do you get those? Buy them: The quickest, easiest way to get Domain authority is to buy it at Text-Link-Ads.com. Unfortunately, it ain’t cheap. Take your nique products and promote them in the online community: Get out into the online community, target some top bloggers in or around your industry and try to get them talking about your unique product. Again, this doesn’t really work for drop shippers because no one is going to link to your site when there are more reputable ones out there to link to so… Put Something On Your site worth linking to: Compile a great list of resources, make how-to videos, develop a calculator, or other custom tool. If your products aren’t unique and link-friendly, you’ll need some site content that is. Submit to directories: If you go to the forums they’ll tell you to submit to hundreds or thousands of directories. Don’t. Those are not high quality links, they don’t transmit domain authority, and they’ll only waste your time… What you need to do is find lists that bloggers or independent webmasters have made. If you must, submit to the directories, but be certain they are specific to your industry. Submit articles: Again, the forums will tell you to submit as many articles as humanly possible. What I’m telling you is this:
Write 3-5 quality articles on topics that people are talking about in your industry (like what I’m doing here). Submit the articles to a bunch of article directories. Link to those articles from your homepage. Link to your homepage from those articles Link Sculpt: Place a nofollow tag on any link that doesn’t point back to your homepage. Go to relevant blogs and forums where topics pertaining to those articles are being discussed, and drop links back to them.
Link exchanges: Despite popular opinion, still work… just don’t go overboard. Deep link: Meaning, repeat 1-6 for your major categories. Buy blog reviews: Go to sponsoredreviews.com or payperpost.com and buy some reviews from RELEVANT bloggers and point them back at your category or product pages. You’ll see a boost. It won’t last forever, but it will leave you in better standing than you were in to begin. Answer questions on forums: And link back to your site in the signature Outsource to India: There are plenty of Indians looking to make a buck on forums like Digital Point. They’ll generally do everything that I just mentioned from 1-10 and they’ll do it for cheap.

You’ve finally completed your product, and now it’s time to sell it. Before you begin typing out a sales page for it, get clear on who your audience or audiences are. What kinds of people or companies do you hope and expect to be buying it? Get clear as well on why you believe they’ll be interested in it. What advantages will they experience from having your product?
Then, keeping your audience and those benefits firmly in mind, sit down and tell readers in a draft of your sales page why they should buy your product, how they will be better off with it – and more so than with any competing products. If you truly imagine yourself speaking to your audience, your pitch usually comes out sounding naturally persuasive. Next it’s time to edit, improve and add to what you wrote, using the checklist below.
Ingredients of a Sales Page that Sells
1. A headline that attracts the attention of your target audience with the #1 benefit your product offers. You don’t need to be cute or clever in your headline. Here are some simple headlines that introduce products at my web site:
- Improve Your Productivity: No More Writer’s Block or Procrastination
- Become a Marketing Consultant and Earn $75 – $150 an Hour!
- Turn What You Know (or What Others Know) into a 24/7 Income Stream
2. A tone that is consistent with how you want buyers to view you – as friendly, authoritative, skeptical, precise, unsophisticated or whatever. The importance of an appropriate tone is a big reason why I don’t recommend getting started by using other people’s sales pages as a model. If their audience and their positioning differ from yours, following their lead can turn your copy into clunky, wrong-headed nonsense. Just go to your rough draft and tweak your word choices and the attitude that comes across in your writing until the wording leaves the impression you want.
3. Clear, unambiguous descriptions of your product and what it includes. It’s amazing how often merchants forget to specify the most fundamental elements of their product, such as whether a product is a CD or a book, whether a video comes on a DVD or is viewable online, whether a coat is washable or dry clean only, and so on. Normally it’s best to spell out the details in a series of bullet points that not only describe what’s what about the product but also state how those element benefit the buyer. For instance:
- Non-tearable outer fabric, so you’ll never lose all the down feathers in the wash
- Day-glo stripe on the back, keeping you safe from hunters while you hike
- Classic styling that you’ll be able to wear for ten years to come
4. The price. Do not force shoppers to click to another page or put something into their shopping cart to find out how much your product costs. If your sales copy is long, make sure someone skimming down the page can locate the price without having to read every paragraph, word by word. Likewise with shipping: don’t make shoppers click everywhere to find (or not find) how much shipping and handling will cost them.
5. Credibility boosters. Why should readers believe what you’re promising? Provide detailed information on credentials, third-party testimonials, media mentions, independent studies on your product’s effectiveness, etc. Unless you’re selling something embarrassing or private, like psychotherapy or a sleepwalking prevention device, blurbs from happy customers should include their full name and another identifier, such as their company or hometown.
6. Responses to objections, doubts and questions. It’s essential to think your way into the shopper’s head and head off the most likely “But”s and “What If”s. You can do this in a section of questions and answers or in regular text. Helpful too is providing some way for readers with additional questions to get them answered. Make sure that one way or another, potential buyers finish reading your sales spiel knowing what they need to know and feeling confident that your product addresses their needs.
7. Guarantee. Most of the time, people reading your sales page don’t know you always deliver on your promises, so get them over their hump of uncertainty by offering an unequivocal money-back guarantee. Studies have proven that with a legitimate product, guarantees earn you more than you’d earn without them, even after subtracting those pesky occasional refunds.
8. Call to action. Just as sales copy should always begin with a headline, it should always end with a clear, direct statement of what you want the reader to do next. In most cases, that’s “Order now.” If the product is complex and expensive, the reader’s next step might be “Request your free information packet today.”

If you have a small business then online advertising can help drive traffic to your website. If your business is not yet online, then you would be well advised to have an internet presence since an increasing number of your customers, irrespective of the business you are in, are going online to look for their products and services.
How you do that is another subject, but any business, small or large, has the same problem online: attracting visitors to their websites. People do not just arrive at your site as they would if they were walking round a shopping mall. Sure, your potential customer base is world wide, but the internet is so large that you are unlikely to get any casual visitors that are not seeking your website in particular.
To find out your competition, go to Google.com and enter the keyword for your site or product into your web browser and have a look to the right of the blue line just above the results – that will tell you how many more sites are using the same keyword as you, and that is your competition. For the keyword ‘health foods, for example, that number is over 8 million.
Nobody is going to find your website among another 8 million by chance. You have to direct them to your website by advertising, and here are the main ways for you to achieve that:
1. Pay-Per-Click advertising (PPC). You bid so much for an advert to be shown on the search engine results page for specific keywords, and then pay each time somebody clicks on the advert. The higher you bid, the nearer to the top of Page 1 of the search engine results pages for that keyword your advert will be shown. However, you also pay the amount of your bid for each click, so make sure that your advert is very specific without any ambiguity that could get the wrong people clicking.
If you are selling only 500 mg soluble Vitamin C supplements, don’t advertise just ‘vitamins’ or even ‘Vitamin C’. Advertise ‘Soluble 500 mg Vitamin C Supplements – $xx per 100′. Then the person clicking on your advert will know exactly what you are offering and what they will be paying, thus maximizing your chances of a good click through rate (clicks resulting in sales).
2. Search Engine Optimization: if you can optimize your site well enough to get a good listing in the search engines for your keyword, that is totally free advertising for you day in day out. It is worth doing this to the best of your ability, since although it could take time for your site to be listed, once it has been listed it will remain so for a considerable time, providing you with potentially masses of free traffic.
3. Article marketing can also provide you with free traffic. By writing articles on your niche, and submitting them to article directories, you will not only get a back-link from each directory, so helping your Google PageRank (and hence your search engine listing) but hopefully will also receive a visit from every reader that is so impressed by your article that they want to know more.
The reason for this is that the directories allow you a link back to any page you want on your website from your resource section, in which you can say something about you and your site in addition to providing your URL. Once more, free advertising of which you should take maximum advantage.
4. Ezine advertising can be very profitable, since every niche has at least one ezine relating to it. Check out the internet for ezines relating to your niche using the search term ‘yourniche ezines’ and then contact the owner. Ask for details on advertising, or request a free advertising slot for a free article in return. Many owners of ezines will give you a free advert in return for a good article on the niche.
5. Finally, start a blog. WordPress and Blogger provide you with free blogs that you can use for any purpose (except certain banned topics). You can use your blog to provide weekly courses on your niche, thus building a regular readership or just to provide updates each time you add content to your website. Put your advert on your own blog, and you could find a lot more traffic visiting your website.
It does not matter how large or small your business is – these suggestions do work. However, they tend to be more successful with small businesses for the simple reason that larger firms tend to ignore such advertising techniques and throw money at more direct ads. The fact that they are missing opportunities appears to miss them.
You, however, can profit enormously by advertising your business as much as possible online. It is possible to this without your business having an online presence, but it is far more effective if you have a website, so get started with that first and then profit from it.
Working at home has been a dream of many that goes back many years. Staying at home and enjoying watching the kids grow up is a goal worth fighting for.
Let’s take a look into making a living or part time living from the comfort of your home. You owe it to yourself to gain the freedom a home business can offer.
In the past, there have been multi-level marketing plans to sell everything from vitamins to soap. There have been mail order catalog opportunities. Many tried buying and selling real estate. Each of these opportunities made many people a lot of money, but each of them also cost many people more money.
More people have spent money than have made money in every business venture.
The problem is many inexperienced people get into money making schemes after attending a meeting somewhere. The offer may be legitimate, but most people fail in business.
According to the US Small Business Administration, over 50% of small businesses fail in the first year and 95% fail with the first five years. That is a scary statistic. The stats for online businesses is even more scary, up 90% of new online businesses fail within the first 6 months!
With some careful thought and planning you can avoid being one of those stats. Make sure you are doing this not just to make money but because it is a passion or at least something you really enjoy. If you are creative, a people person, self-motivated and have a stable home life, i.e., marriage, and support then go for it!
If you are wise and find a person who’s done it, and is successful plus willing to help you then those factors alone will almost guarantee your success online.
So, what is the answer for the average person who does not want to lose their savings and even their home equity in a business?
Start building a “digital business” online. Create a website that generates its income without you needing to invest in inventory or even lease a building to house your business. Then create two or ten more websites generating income for you.
You may not know how to create a website today. It is an easily learned skill. There is software you can buy or download FREE that will help you. There are tutorials on making a website profitable. You can do this.
Once you have a website online you can put other people’s advertising on your site and be paid when someone buys one of their products. This is called affiliate marketing. If this was my baby toys webpage and I mentioned a great baby toy with a link to my advertiser’s toy page you might go there and buy the toy. If you did, I would get a commission.
You could also put ads on your pages that only require someone to click on the ad for you to be paid. Again, if you were on my baby toy page and an ad talks about a toy. You click on the ad to go see it and I am paid for you clicking on the ad.
The advertiser feels their sales page is compelling enough for them to sell enough of that toy to cover their cost of the clicks that got you there.
Some advertisers do not require you to buy the product when you click on an ad, but you will not be paid unless you fill out their application. This is usually seen on sites like insurance sites or loan application sites. You do not have to get a policy or take out a loan for me to be paid. When you fill out the form, I qualify for my commission for sending you to the advertiser.
These are typically the ways a beginning website entrepreneur starts generating income on the Internet. Once you understand that part of internet marketing, you may move on to selling your own digital products. A digital product is one that can be downloaded from your website. You can sell your own ebook you wrote yourself or an ebook you purchased and have the rights to sell online.
If you are a programmer, you can sell you own computer program from your site. You could also sell someone else’s program that you purchased the rights to sell. Notice that not all of the above ideas require you to invest in a lot of inventory. Even the products are FREE if you create them yourself. Not everything you are doing so far requires a large investment of your hard earned money. It does require a large investment of your time.
All of the material you need to create a website can be found FREE online if you do not want to purchase some popular program. Your only expense SHOULD be a domain of your own, such as yourdomain.com. You can get FREE hosting from various places but for your moneymaking venture, this is not advised. For a small investment, you too can be PRESIDENT OF YOUR OWN COMPANY.
Maybe the statistics are the same for success online as they are in other businesses, but this is a chance to find out without losing the farm doing it. The reason most online / home based businesses fail or never make any money, is because of the lack of a plan. As with a brick and mortar, offline, business you have to know where you want to go, how you will get there and when. The old saying, “those who fail to plan, plan to fail” has never been more true than building an online business.

Many businesses are looking for alternate methods to grow their businesses due to the apparent downturn in the economy. This translates to the need for business owners to look for other proven methods to generate income with a current trend in the business world showing an increase in eCommerce interest.
According to Forrester Research, 2007 online sales experienced a growth of 21% over 2006 and future trends show a continued growth of around 14% p/a over the next 5 years, despite the current wavering economy.
The Dilemma of developing an eCommerce site that performs -
How do you build a good eCommerce website that delivers profits to the bottom line? One of the great challenges for Australian Businesses deciding to tackle the on-line world, is in the style of site they believe they need to design to generate any real profits.
Director of retail Phil Bonnano from The Leading Edge said, “Many websites in Australia are a basic catalogue pages placed on their website. There isn’t really a good demonstration of integration between websites and other technologies. A Majority of websites lack innovation, offer nothing new or exciting and fail to engage their visitors,”
This identifies an untapped market in Australia, where anyone with vision can establish themselves as the market leader in their niche.
Successful eCommerce websites are built by using Proven Techniques -
The key to a successful eCommerce site is in establishing a solid foundation and planning the future success. It’s critical to understand what and how a customer will buy from you and the message you want to portray about your business.
Think of creating a new website like the opening a new outlet or store.
Would you expect to have a high performing store if your customers had to walk through an unidentifiable maze to find your cash register? Or even worse, would you design a physical store where you customer is ready to buy only to discover they can’t complete their transaction as they are shopping in a display only store?
It is critical for your customers to find their shopping experience simple and enjoyable.
It is possible to achieve this through a combination of proven web design and eCommerce techniques.
eCommerce offers a Measurable Return on Investment -
One of the greatest challenges in marketing is through understanding what does and doesn’t work. Different marketing strategies can take months to come to fruition and you may not even understand if they are actually achieving a return on investment. eCommerce is proving to break free from the mould offering a medium that allows successful measure of campaigns through applications such as Google Analytics.
As David Trewern from marketing agency DTDigital was quoted as saying “You are able to prove your return on your investment – it is pretty difficult to find that level of information and data from other methods of measurement. You no longer have to guess what is working which gives you an upper hand in a bad economic environment, when people want to ensure they are achieving a result.”
eCommerce offers the opportunity for all businesses to compete on a level playing field -
In the world of Bricks and Mortar there is a huge difference between small and big business. Myers, David Jones and Woolworths hold the obvious upper hand over smaller independent retailers. This translates across many different industries and identifies a necessity to consider other mediums in order to grow business.
Any business with a solid eCommerce plan are proof anyone can out perform their competition in the on-line world.
Sites like vroomvroomvroom are an example of how smaller businesses can compete on the same playing field as Hertz, Avis and Budget through smart eCommerce sites that make it easier for visitors to navigate and buy through.
They currently have only 10 employees, and through well thought eCommerce strategies and implementation of technology have established themselves as market leaders in the Australian car hire industry. By redeveloping their eCommerce strategy they managed to grow their revenue by 121% in 12 months.
Do I need to take out a second mortgage to get a piece of the eCommerce action?
With expected growth of 14% p/a it is important to ensure you have a well thought eCommerce strategy to establish yourself as a leader in your niche. This will obviously involve an investment, but will not cost you anywhere near the price of setting up a physical shop and hiring a team of people to run it. Think of an eCommerce presence like a sales person servicing your customers 24/7, reducing your time and expenses you’d normally have to spend.
In today’s economic climate it is critical to ensure you are adapting to the market place. What better way to do that then to become a market leader in your niche through the development of an eCommerce strategy that will outperform your competition.

If you want to start an online business and you have virtually no budget there are several options available to you. This article explores online businesses that you can start on a shoestring – for those of you who are on a tight budget but still want to start an online business.
Before you start any online business you will need a computer with access to the Internet, but since I think you are reading this article online, I am going to assume that you already have those. And that is good because it means you already have the major expenses taken care of. If you have a computer and Internet access then you can get started with an online business today.
Here are a few online business ideas for those on a tight budget.
1. Launch a Web Site
It is not expensive to set up an online publication in the form of a web site, ezine or blog. You can obtain a good web hosting package for as low as five dollars per month. If your budget is too low even to afford that then you could set up a free blog at Blogger.com.
The key with a web site business is to build popular sites with a large following of regular readers. Then turn that traffic into revenue through advertising, subscriptions, and sales of your own products and services.
For your web site content I recommend that you write your own original articles as that can be more effective and less expensive. By having original content your pages will rank more highly at the major search engines. Another option is to pay freelance writers a fee for writing articles for your site. It is also possible to source articles from free article directories but keep in mind they will not be original.
2. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate programs are one of the most popular ways for companies to market their products and services online. A company offers a product or service. As an affiliate you sign up to promote the product. Your task is to send a stream of visitors to the company’s web site. You do this using a customized link that allows the company to identify which affiliate referred the visitor. Whenever a visitor sent by you buys a product, you earn a commission.
Many affiliates promote affiliate products by placing advertisements at pay-per-click search engines. If you are on a tight budget, however, you can use other methods to promote affiliate products such as promoting them on your own web pages or writing articles relating to the product.
3. Article Marketing
Article marketing is one of the best ways to build an online business at no cost. In fact article marketing can be a business in itself. Article marketing involves writing articles that webmasters can use on their web sites, in return for showing an “About the Author” resource box at the end of the article. That paragraph about the author includes a live link to the author’s web site.
You can write articles on almost any topic imaginable. Article marketing is very popular because webmasters need content for their web sites and good content is hard to come by.
Those resource boxes are your opportunity to obtain large amounts of web traffic at no cost. You can use your resource boxes to send traffic to your own web site or to send visitors to landing pages that promote affiliate products.
4. Freelance Writing
If you like to write but you do not want to set up your own web site or online publication, you can still start working online, for example as a freelance writer. Freelance writers are paid to write many types of documents, from articles for magazines and newspapers through to business sales letters, instruction manuals and even greeting cards.
